Capital Maritime Finance Corp., the container shipping company in which Evangelos Marinakis holds a majority stake, concluded its first week of trading on the Athens Stock Exchange on a positive note, despite facing pressure toward the end of the week. According to a Bloomberg report, the company’s shares initially surged following their listing on the Greek stock exchange, before paring gains during the final sessions of the week.
Capital Maritime Finance, which raised €300 million ($336 million) through its initial public offering, closed the October 23rd session at €7.53 per share, marginally above its initial offering price. This performance takes on particular significance when compared to the broader market, as the Athens Stock Exchange’s blue-chip index recorded losses of 3% over the same period.
Bloomberg: What the report says about Evangelos Marinakis’ Capital Maritime
Speaking to Bloomberg News from New York, Evangelos Marinakis placed special emphasis on retail investor participation in the public offering. As he noted, more than 50% of the shares placed through the IPO went to individual investors — a fact he described as being of “tremendous importance” to him personally.
According to the Greek businessman, this development gives Greek citizens the opportunity to invest in a shipping company, gaining exposure to one of the most significant sectors of the Greek economy.
What Evangelos Marinakis said
Marinakis described Capital Maritime’s listing on the Athens Stock Exchange as a move that corrects a “historical paradox” — namely, that Greece is a global shipping powerhouse, yet domestic investors have had limited opportunities to directly participate in the sector through the local market.
Capital Maritime Finance is the first shipping group to complete a primary listing on Euronext Athens, marking a new chapter in connecting Greek shipping with the domestic capital market, the report notes. This development follows the dual listings of dry bulk shipping companies Star Bulk Carriers Corp. and Safe Bulkers Inc., which had both taken place earlier in 2026. It is also the second stock market listing of a Capital Maritime & Trading Corp. group company within the same year.
This was preceded in March by the listing of Capital Tankers Corp. on the Oslo Stock Exchange, confirming the group’s strategy of leveraging different international capital markets to fund and further develop its shipping operations. The Capital Maritime & Trading group also maintains majority control of the US-listed Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corp., which operates in the liquefied gas transportation sector.
Evangelos Marinakis in the United States
Evangelos Marinakis traveled to the United States for the inauguration of a new academic building at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The building bears the Marinakis family name, in recognition of the family’s donations to the institution, Bloomberg reports. During his US visit, the Greek businessman also attended a performance by the Greek National Opera.
Beyond his shipping interests, Evangelos Marinakis holds stakes in football clubs Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos, and Rio Ave, as well as in the Greek media group Alter Ego Media.
Capital Maritime Finance’s entry onto the Athens Stock Exchange represents a further step in expanding the group’s stock market footprint, with the strong first-week performance recorded despite the challenging climate that prevailed across the broader Greek market.
