The Ministry of Labor is expected to approve more than 100,000 worker transfers from third countries for 2026, aimed at filling vacant positions in professions where there is a shortage of Greek workers. This specific strategy is also supported by Interior Minister Niki Kerameos, who emphasized that “we need legal migration if we want to maintain this growth rate we have (2.3%).” She pointed out that “we are exhausting the pool of the domestic labor market, but we also need others.”
For this year, 89,290 work permits had been approved for citizens of third countries. The specialties mainly concerned unskilled agricultural workers, construction workers, machine operators, industrial workers, as well as administrative staff. Of these positions, 45,520 concerned seasonal employment. It is recalled that the previous decision covered 147,925 positions for the 2023-2024 biennium, while later, within 2024, an additional 32,517 transfers were approved to address pressing needs in the agricultural sector, construction, tourism and food service.
