Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris has ordered a review of the asylum status of the 32-year-old Palestinian perpetrator of the Mount Hymettus arson, who was arrested for sexual attacks on minors in the Aigaleo Metro station. According to information sources, Minister Plevris requested the asylum service to take all necessary steps to review the asylum status granted to the 32-year-old offender.
It should be noted that public safety risks or criminal convictions justify the revocation of the protection status provided by asylum. This same practice will be automatically followed in all cases where asylum beneficiaries commit criminal offenses.
Timeline of the case
As reported by Giorgos Sombolos on parapolitika.gr, the young foreign national had declared himself a war refugee when he illegally entered our country seeking asylum from the Greek authorities, as the situation in his homeland was chaotic, according to police officers handling the case of the foreign man, who is charged with attacks on three women in Aigaleo, as well as for a fire he caused in early September in Vyronas.
Aigaleo: Three attacks within hours by the exhibitionist and Hymettus arsonist
This is the man, allegedly from Syria or Palestine, who within a few hours attacked a 14-year-old, a 17-year-old, and a 58-year-old woman in the Aigaleo area, intending to sexually assault them. However, this same person had caused a fire just days earlier for unknown reasons in a forest area near Vyronas, which fortunately was brought under control in time before threatening the already suffering forest of Mount Hymettus.
Had been charged with attempted murder
Additionally, as revealed, this person was walking free despite the fact that he had been charged with attempted murder, with a fellow countryman as victim in central Athens, specifically at Omonia Square a few months ago. Obviously, this is an individual with severe psychological problems, who was nevertheless walking free despite the serious charge pending against him.
Testimony expected within the day
The perpetrator is expected to give testimony in the coming hours, both for the attacks on the three women and for the fire he allegedly caused on Mount Hymettus. It remains unknown whether, if he is ultimately remanded in custody, he will be deported after serving his sentence or will be allowed to remain in the country.
