The first major heatwave of this summer is expected to hit Greece in the coming days, with temperatures rising gradually from Saturday and the heat wave peaking on Monday and Tuesday. According to Star channel meteorologist Matina Berou, mercury levels will exceed 40 degrees Celsius in several parts of Greece, with local readings potentially reaching as high as 42 degrees. The temperature rise will begin on Saturday, when maximum values will approach 39 degrees, while Thessaly, Western Central Greece, and the Peloponnese are expected to be the first regions to record temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius.
On Sunday, the heat wave will intensify further, with Thessaly, the wider Agrinio area, and Amfissa expected to be at the epicenter of the heatwave, recording up to 41 degrees Celsius. In Attica, temperatures will also climb to particularly high levels, with maximum values reaching up to 39 degrees.
Weather: The regions that will record the highest temperatures
According to the latest forecast data, the heatwave is expected to peak on Monday and Tuesday, when temperatures in many parts of the country will reach or exceed 40 degrees Celsius. In the hottest areas of Thessaly, Aetolia-Acarnania, Boeotia, Phthiotis, Argolis, and Elis, local readings of up to 42 degrees are possible. In Attica, temperatures are expected to reach 40 degrees in some locations — though this does not mean the entire region will experience such highs. Northern winds along the eastern sections and sea breezes may keep temperatures lower in coastal areas.
Winds will play a decisive role in determining the final peak temperatures, as even minor changes in their intensity and direction could significantly affect the highest recorded values.
According to current estimates, the heat wave is expected to ease from Thursday onward, when a noticeable drop in temperature is forecast. At the same time, the chances of more unsettled weather are increasing, marking the end of the summer’s first intense heatwave.
