While Socrates Famellos insists he does not want a confrontational course with Alexis Tsipras — emphasizing that SYRIZA will not field a ballot in the next elections — Pavlos Polakis has stepped into the spotlight, making clear he is very much present in the unfolding developments. Meanwhile, Nikos Pappas, one of the party figures demanding answers from the SYRIZA leader about how cooperation with the Greek Police (ELAS) will be achieved, continues to insist that the party’s historical chapter has not yet closed — stressing that Socrates Famellos must clarify the scope of his responsibilities.
SYRIZA: Polakis signals he’s ready and leaves the leadership question open
According to sources, scenarios involving a motion of no confidence against Socrates Famellos remain on the table — provided Pavlos Polakis manages to gather 70 votes and reconvene the Central Committee. “I have never backed down at critical moments,” declared the independent MP Pavlos Polakis, signaling in his own way that he is available for the SYRIZA leadership should developments unfold — whether through resignation or the removal of the current party leadership.
Launching a sharp attack, Polakis observed that “the leader of a party, Socrates Famellos, is supporting a different party,” while in response to a question about whether the current image of SYRIZA’s headquarters at Koumoundourou falls exclusively on Famellos, the independent MP from Chania replied: “without meaning that he bears no responsibility for inheriting a party at 10% and now having us at 2%.”
He also declared himself a passionate advocate of political alliances, stating that “we want everyone to come together for a progressive front that will bring down Mitsotakis,” while adding, however, that “Tsipras’s programmatic address does not cover what I stand for.”
In any case, the MP from Chania assessed that in the coming period “radical solutions must be found,” adding: “if they want to leave, good for them, good riddance. For those of us who don’t want this, we must ensure there is a different decision from the Central Committee,” he concluded.
Famellos: I want political developments before the Thessaloniki International Fair
For his part, Socrates Famellos stressed in an interview that “I would very much like to see political developments well before this year’s Thessaloniki International Fair — without calling into question any of SYRIZA’s political planning — so that there is a clear answer to Kyriakos Mitsotakis.”
