The cross-party committee for Constitutional Revision will have a two-month deadline to complete its work. Its establishment will take place in the coming days, following the submission of New Democracy’s proposal. This discussion took place during today’s (4/6) Conference of Presidents session, where some opposition MPs expressed their disagreement, believing that two months is insufficient time.
Constitutional revision: 42-member committee established
According to Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis, the committee will consist of 42 members with a cross-party presidency. Next Wednesday, during a special session, the parliamentary plenary will ratify the committee’s formation and work will begin immediately.
Once deliberations in the cross-party committee are completed, the plenary will take over. Through two separate votes at least one month apart, it will decide by roll-call vote on each proposed article.
Articles receiving at least 151 positive votes in both votings will advance to the next phase of the process. After national elections, the third and final vote will require 180 votes for each article to be revised.
Only articles that receive 180 “yes” votes from the current Parliament will be able to pass after elections with a simple majority. However, based on opposition positions so far, the required consensus cannot be achieved.
