Trump’s participation was not considered certain, as the American president had expressed strong dissatisfaction with countries like the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy, accusing them of not sufficiently supporting American efforts in managing the Iran crisis.
The official clarified that the G7 summit is not expected to produce signed agreements, but aims to create a common framework and consensus for future deals. The summit will take place from June 15-17 in Évian-les-Bains in southeastern France, and beyond potential discussions on Iran, Trump wants to focus on business matters.
Among his objectives are:
- Linking American aid with trade to achieve mutual benefits for investors and host countries.
- Promoting adoption of artificial intelligence tools developed in the US.
- Reducing Chinese control over critical mineral supply chains.
- Fighting drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
- Promoting American exports, reducing regulatory barriers, and increasing energy production, primarily fossil fuels.
Emmanuel Macron invited Donald Trump to Versailles after the G7 Summit
French President Emmanuel Macron, a frequent target of Trump in recent months, reportedly invited the American president to an official dinner after the summit at the Palace of Versailles, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations, though it remains unclear whether the American president will attend.
The summit takes place while tensions over Iran continue to affect US relations with almost all G7 allies and beyond. Despite the possibility that opposing sides may reach some agreement by mid-June, certain tensions are expected to remain.
On Tuesday, at the G7 finance ministers meeting in Paris, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the need to impose more sanctions against “Iranian terrorism” and its financing, calling for G7 cooperation: “Fighting terrorism requires all of you to act together,” he said. “We call on all allies and the rest of the world to follow the sanctions regime to limit illegal funding that feeds Iran’s military machine and return this money to the Iranian people.”
