The Israeli military appears to have maintained a second secret base in Iraq, according to a New York Times report. This secret base was reportedly used during the 12-day war against Iran last June.
The secret “outpost” in the western Iraq desert was used for air support, resupply, and medical care by the Israeli military. According to the article, a shepherd and a soldier were killed to prevent the discovery of its existence.
NYT: Israel maintained second secret base in Iraq – What the report says
The New York Times reports that the base existed before this year’s US-Israel war against Iran and was used by Israeli forces during the 12-day conflict.
The newspaper also reports that the US knew of its existence, meaning Washington concealed from Baghdad the fact that “hostile forces” were operating on Iraqi soil.
This marks the second Israeli base on Iraqi territory. Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Israel had deployed a secret base in Iran, shortly before the war began, operating as a special forces center and logistics hub for the Israeli air force.
No official comment from Iraq
So far there has been no official comment from Iraq, although spokesman for the Iraqi armed forces commander, Sabah al-Numan, had stated that the country would not allow its territory to be used for attacks against other states.
