Clarifying that he will not serve as president or leader of a political formation, Ilias Kasidiaris reiterated his intention to actively return to political developments and participate in upcoming elections through a new party. The former MP and leading member of Golden Dawn, who has been convicted in the first instance to 13 years imprisonment for directing a criminal organization, states that after his release, he will give a “dynamic presence” in the next elections, actively participating in a new party, without however assuming the role of president, general secretary or founder.
The former Golden Dawn leadership figure estimates he will be released in early September 2026, when –as he states– he completes 5/5 of his second-degree sentence. In his statement, he maintains that he retains “full political rights to vote and be elected,” citing a pending appeal before the Supreme Court. At the same time, he reminds that he participated in the 2023 local elections as head of a faction in the Municipality of Athens.
Ilias Kasidiaris: His complete statement
“I inform you that on 06/05/26 I publicly announced my will to return to the central political scene of the country immediately after my release.
In early September 2026 I complete 5/5 of the second-degree sentence imposed on me and I am definitively released. My criminal record remains clean as my appeal is pending before the Supreme Court. Therefore I maintain FULL POLITICAL RIGHTS to vote and be elected.
Even as a prisoner, I normally participated in the 2023 Local Elections and was elected as head of a faction in the Municipality of Athens with the vote of Greek citizens.
Because the voted targeted amendments of the 2023 period place obstacles on party formations, I declare that I do not intend to engage in politics as leader or president or general secretary or founder of a party, etc.
Nevertheless, I will give a dynamic presence in political developments by actively participating in a new party formation and I will return to the front line of political developments based on my constitutionally guaranteed rights.
With respect, Ilias Kasidiaris“
