The trial of a 72-year-old woman accused of operating an illegal elderly care facility in an apartment in Ampelokipoi, which she rented from a foreign national, is expected to begin today, Wednesday, at 12 noon at the Three-Member Misdemeanor Court. The case had caused shock after the revelation of the conditions under which the elderly women lived inside the apartment. According to authorities, during a raid conducted at the premises last Thursday, police found four elderly women living isolated in separate rooms under particularly poor hygiene conditions.
As it became known, the apartment had a strong odor, there was accumulated garbage, and even expired food was found. Additionally, four dogs and one cat were found on the premises, which were immediately removed with the assistance of the Municipality of Athens and a veterinarian, in order to examine their health condition and transfer them to a safe environment.
Horror nursing home in Ampelokipoi: Restrictive conditions imposed on the 72-year-old
It should be noted that the trial had been postponed last Saturday because witnesses did not appear to testify.
The court decided to impose restrictive conditions, prohibiting the 72-year-old from leaving the country, while also requiring her to appear once a month at the local police station until the completion of the trial.
She faces charges of attempted extortion, repeated endangerment, and disobedience.
The advertisement that hid the crime
In her advertisement, she promoted that she offered elderly care services for 650 euros, with her last client booked during Holy Week. The last agreement the 72-year-old made was also the one that exposed her, as 650 euros was not enough for her and she demanded more. According to Mega, in a recent communication with an elderly woman’s daughter, she demanded 2,000 euros to care for her mother, threatening that otherwise she would leave the unfortunate woman next to the garbage bin. After this, the woman was terrorized and contacted the authorities. She then recognized the 72-year-old in photographs of flagged individuals that were shown to her and subsequently proceeded with the relevant complaint. Moreover, it emerged that the 72-year-old was flagged, as this was not the first time a complaint was made against her. Specifically, there were similar complaints about the 72-year-old both in September 2025 and January 2026, but they ultimately did not proceed, as initially she had not opened the door to police who went to investigate, and as soon as she began to be cornered, she gave them false information about the people she was caring for.
The investigation for accomplices and additional victims
At the same time, during the police investigation, an attempt is being made to unravel the “ball of yarn” of the story further. Specifically, authorities are examining whether the 72-year-old had an accomplice or accomplices and whether there was another space she used, since the house in Ampelokipoi, which operated both as an illegal nursing home and as a pet hotel, is registered in a man’s name. At the same time, research is being conducted to see if there are more victims of the 72-year-old, while it appears that the possibility remains open that there may be criminal liability for the families of the women who stayed in this particular nursing home, as when authorities asked them to take the women from there, they declared inability.
