A tragedy unfolded during the Athens Flying Week 2026 air show at Tanagra Air Base, when a Phantom jet crashed just minutes after takeoff. Approximately two minutes after the aircraft became airborne, the excitement and festive atmosphere of the air show were suddenly replaced by shock and silence. Spectators watched in disbelief as events unfolded, while organizers attempted to calm the crowd.

Both Phantom pilots were found dead at a distance from the crash site. According to an official announcement by the Hellenic Air Force General Staff, the aircraft came down approximately 3 nautical miles southeast of the 114 Combat Wing, with wreckage scattered across multiple locations in the surrounding area. Part of the debris was found inside and near the warehouse facilities of a factory, where the impact occurred and was followed by a fire. Images show sections of the Phantom jet within the factory grounds. Two individuals sustained minor injuries from aircraft debris. According to available information, they are foreign nationals residing at the Ritsona reception facility. Their injuries are limited to abrasions on the back and, according to the same sources, they are not in any danger.
