By decision of Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias, all schools in Attica will remain closed on Wednesday (21/01) due to the approaching severe weather. Specifically, following Mr. Hardalias’s decision and upon recommendation from the Risk Assessment Committee members, Civil Protection, and the National Meteorological Service, all public and private primary and secondary schools will remain closed tomorrow for precautionary reasons, as well as night schools throughout Attica. Regarding the final decision on closing nurseries, this is left to each individual municipality.
It’s worth noting that the Attica Region’s announcement regarding school closures due to severe weather covers kindergartens.
Hardalias on severe weather: Attica placed under red alert status
It should be recalled that, regarding the school closures and the “Red Alert” issued by the Risk Assessment Committee, Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias stated:
“Just moments ago, our Attica was placed under red alert status. Therefore, taking into account the meteorological models and recommendations from the Risk Assessment Committee, we decided to close schools in Attica for tomorrow, Wednesday. The phenomena are expected to be particularly intense from 12 noon onwards, with severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and greater water volume than the previous time. What concerns us is not so much the rainfall height, but its intensity – a lot of water in very little time.
Classes are not lost. We utilize distance learning and limit movements, especially during critical hours of weather phenomena manifestation, as the Attica Region alone conducts 1,910 daily routes for more than 32,000 students. We respect family planning, but we know the strengths and weaknesses of old infrastructure and choose to act preventively. Because our responsibility towards our children is clear and leaves no room for risk. And when it comes to their safety, we must stay one step ahead.”
