Kyriakos Pierrakakis is the new president of the Eurogroup, marking a historic moment for Greece and its presence on the European stage. With a comfortable majority of votes from the 20 finance ministers of the eurozone, the Greek minister of National Economy and Finance emerged victorious against his Belgian opponent, Vincent Van Peteghem.
Pierrakakis’s victory has deep symbolism for Greece. A country that a decade ago risked exiting the euro, today emerges as a leading force at the heart of European economic policy. This development is interpreted as recognition of efforts for reforms, fiscal stability and return to growth.
At a time when the Eurozone faces geopolitical and fiscal challenges, Pierrakakis’s election sends a message of unity and confidence while simultaneously confirming Greece’s ability to actively contribute to shaping the EU’s future economic policies.
With the assumption of his new duties, Kyriakos Pierrakakis becomes one of the key protagonists in one of the Eurozone’s most important collective bodies and Greece returns to the center of European decisions with an enhanced and upgraded role.
Kyriakos Pierrakakis: German support for the Eurogroup presidency
German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil stated earlier – according to Bloomberg agency which makes special reference to Berlin’s support – that he would support Kyriakos Pierrakakis’s candidacy.
“I made it clear in personal conversations with my Belgian and Greek colleagues that, as German Finance Minister, in consultation with the chancellor, I will vote today in favor of my Greek colleague” he emphasized characteristically.
Message from Kostis Hatzidakis
The vice president of New Democracy sent a congratulatory message via his Facebook post: “Congratulations to Kyriakos Pierrakakis for his election as President of the Eurogroup!
This is a great success both for him and for Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the New Democracy Government and above all for Greece!
His election underlines that our country, which 10 years ago was at the door of euro exit, is today considered in Brussels an example of success.
Have no doubt that, if we had not followed a serious and credible policy, we could not even submit a candidacy for the Presidency of the Eurogroup. The universe has not conspired in favor of the Government!
We certainly do not claim that all problems have been solved. However, great progress has been made in our economy over the past 6 years, even within an environment of successive international crises.
And we are determined, through systematic effort, to take Greece even higher!”.
