The deputy chairman of the AKP parliamentary group, Abdulhamit Gül, has declared his support for a new presidential candidacy by Turkey‘s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in the country’s next presidential election. Gül argued that there is no legal obstacle preventing Erdoğan from running again. The statement was made during events held under the “Meetings of Turkey’s Century” initiative.

“One of the most important consensuses of our nation is for our president to continue his path as president and lead Turkey toward stronger leadership. There is no legal or constitutional obstacle to our president running again,” Abdulhamit Gül stated. He also expressed confidence that the Turkish parliament would rise to meet the “nation’s expectation.”
“The third crescent remains”
Meanwhile, MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli set May 14, 2028 as the date for the general elections, noting that holding them earlier would not constitute “snap elections” but rather a “renewal of elections.” “Our president has completed two of his three crescents — he won the 2018 and 2023 elections, and now the third crescent of the three remains. Let us hope he will complete the third crescent as well,” he said, referring to each of Erdoğan’s terms as a “crescent.”
