Donald Trump and Iran are at odds once again — this time over the Strait of Hormuz. The US President, speaking at a New York City police academy, declared that he would “soon announce the Strait of Hormuz as part of US territory, once we stop beating Iran…” He said it with a smile, clearly implying that the United States stands as the victor in the broader Middle East conflict. Iran wasted no time firing back, responding with a blunt warning: “We will break your legs.”
Trump escalated the sarcasm further by posting a map of the Strait of Hormuz labeled “New US Territory.” It remains to be seen whether there is any actual legal or geopolitical basis behind such a claim. Meanwhile, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, had announced just hours before the post that Iran would maintain the closure of the Strait of Hormuz until the United States complies with the terms of the Islamabad interim agreement.
