Donald Trump stated today that Washington and Tehran have agreed to continue diplomatic contacts, despite a fresh escalation of tensions in the Middle East. At the same time, he made clear that the ceasefire reached between the two sides last month “no longer exists.” In a post on his Truth Social platform, Donald Trump claimed that Iran had requested the continuation of talks. “The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue talks. We have agreed, but made it absolutely clear that the ceasefire is now over,” he wrote.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue “talks.” We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP

Tehran pushes back
Iran’s Foreign Ministry, for its part, warned that it would respond accordingly to any violations of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the United States. “Any breach of commitments by the US will be met with retaliatory action,” a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, according to Iranian state television. The ministry flatly rejected Trump’s claim that Iran had requested a resumption of negotiations following the recent escalation between the two countries. “We did not request negotiations with the US — we accepted a visit by Qatari mediators to Iran.”
