The Iranian Revolutionary Guards announced today (6/5) that the Strait of Hormuz could resume operations after the end of “threats from attackers,” according to Reuters. In its statement, the Revolutionary Guards’ navy said that “safe and stable passage” is now possible.
Revolutionary Guards: Statement following Trump’s declarations
This statement comes shortly after declarations by US President Donald Trump, who announced that he is temporarily “freezing” the “Project Freedom” plan to open the Strait of Hormuz, citing “significant progress” toward a “complete and final agreement.” Meanwhile, Iranian authorities thanked shipowners and captains for their compliance regarding passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran announces transit fees
Simultaneously, Iran announced the establishment of an authority that will grant approval for ships’ passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran is implementing an approval procedure through the “Persian Gulf Strait Authority.” Iran is requiring ships to submit applications, pay fees, and receive approval, according to Tasnim.
White House: We are close to an agreement with Iran
In a latest development, the White House estimates it is close to an agreement with Iran, with a one-page memorandum of understanding to end the war certifying the revision of consensus terms. As reported by the American network Axios, citing two American officials and two other sources with knowledge of the matter, a potential new agreement would include Iran’s commitment to cap nuclear material enrichment, the US commitment to lift sanctions against Tehran, as well as the removal of restrictions from both sides regarding passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
The American report adds that the US expects responses from Iran on critical points within the next 48 hours. According to a special military analyst from the British network Sky News, however, the latest development constitutes a positive step, but this news is still being treated with caution.
As analyst Sean Bean specifically noted: “Since the beginning of this conflict, we have heard all kinds of statements, especially from the American president’s Truth Social platform. I think the positive thing we can take away is that, although no formal talks between the US and Iran are taking place at this moment, it’s quite obvious that Pakistan continues to work intensively behind the scenes,” he adds.
