The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, is set to make her first official overseas visit next week after three and a half years. She will travel to Italy as part of her work promoting early childhood development. This trip marks the princess’s major return to official duties following health challenges, the most serious being her cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy treatments.
Kate Middleton: The princess’s grand return and first official overseas trip since 2022
The last time 44-year-old Kate Middleton traveled abroad was in 2022, when she accompanied her husband Prince William to Boston for the Earthshot Awards in December 2022. Earlier that year, she had made a trip to Denmark in January.
It should be noted that in January 2024, she was hospitalized for serious abdominal surgery and was later diagnosed with cancer, which required preventive chemotherapy and resulted in her temporarily stepping back from public duties.
The Princess of Wales will travel to Italy next Wednesday, to the city of Reggio Emilia, for a two-day working visit with the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, which she founded in 2021 and has characterized as her “life’s work.”
Kensington Palace spokesperson: “The princess is looking forward to visiting Italy”
“The Princess is looking forward to visiting Italy next week and exploring firsthand how the Reggio Emilia approach creates environments where nature and loving human relationships combine to support children’s development,” a Kensington Palace spokesperson said.
The “Reggio Emilia Approach” to preschool education is a world-renowned initiative, introduced shortly after World War II, for raising and teaching young children. It emphasizes experiential learning led by children through relationships, collaboration and expressions such as art, drama and movement, with the natural world considered the “third teacher,” it is noted.
The Princess of Wales has “wanted to see it up close for quite some time,” as it combines two of her greatest passions: early childhood development and the natural world. The trip to Italy marks a defining “new milestone” for the princess’s work with the Centre and inaugurates new global ambitions for both her and her team.
Today, she will highlight this work as she launches a new program for all those working with babies, young children and their families in East London. “Building for Life: A guide to social and emotional development” is designed to strengthen understanding across the early years system about why social and emotional development is so important and how these skills begin to form from the first months of life.
Kate Middleton will visit the University of East London to meet families, researchers and students, along with education leaders from across the United Kingdom. In the prologue to her new initiative, the Princess writes: “In a world that seems increasingly abstract, fragmented and digital… it is more important than ever to invest in what truly helps us thrive: human connection.”
It is emphasized that by age five, a child’s brain has reached 90% of its adult size, making early childhood a critical window for developing the social and emotional skills that will form the foundation of adult life. She adds: “While our society often focuses on academic or physical milestones, research consistently shows that our first relationships, experiences and environments are what lay the foundation for our future health and happiness.”
