For the first time in his now eight years of traveling to New York as prime minister for the United Nations General Assembly, Mitsotakis chose to stop first in San Francisco, with artificial intelligence front and center. Over the past two years, he has been following the global AI conversation with increasing attention — tracking both the risks that rapid development may pose and the extraordinary opportunities it could unlock. Most recently, the Greek parliament passed legislation by the Ministry of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence establishing the National Framework for implementing the European AI Act. Under the new law, Greece now has a comprehensive national framework in place, creating an integrated mechanism for oversight, coordination, and innovation support — ensuring that artificial intelligence is deployed safely, transparently, and with full respect for citizens’ rights.
Just hours after arriving in San Francisco, Prime Minister Mitsotakis visited the headquarters of Nvidia — which last year became the first company in the world to reach a $5 trillion market capitalization, driven largely by the AI boom — and Sequoia Capital, the renowned venture firm that invests primarily in emerging technology startups.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis at Nvidia: Talks on digital and computing infrastructure investments
At the meeting held at Nvidia, hosted by John Josephakis, Global Vice President for Sales and Business Development, and attended by the company’s senior leadership, the Prime Minister had the opportunity to discuss the significant investments in digital and computing infrastructure currently underway in Greece. Talks also covered how Nvidia leverages its technology and ecosystem to support startups, governments, and leading technology companies in developing and adopting AI applications.
The Prime Minister was also given a tour of Nvidia’s research center, where some of the world’s most advanced semiconductors and computing systems are designed. Nvidia is today one of the largest technology companies on the planet, sitting at the very core of the global AI revolution — its processors and computing platforms serve as essential infrastructure for training and running the most advanced AI models in existence.
At Sequoia Capital: Meeting investors and AI pioneers
The meeting at Sequoia Capital was hosted by Konstantine Buhler and Doug Leone, both partners at the firm, and brought together top-tier investors, researchers from major technology companies and research laboratories, as well as founders and executives of companies at the cutting edge of AI applications across fields such as medicine, education, automation, and robotics.
The visit to Tesla
Prime Minister Mitsotakis also traveled to the headquarters of Tesla — the advanced technology and manufacturing company led by Elon Musk — in Palo Alto, California. According to the official readout, he was given a tour of the company’s main offices and laboratories, where Tesla is pushing the boundaries of electric vehicles, autonomous systems, energy, and humanoid robotics through its Optimus program. The tour was led by Konstantinos Laskaris, Vice President and Director of the Optimus program, and Mitsotakis also met with Greek professionals currently working at Tesla.
