Greek Left Alliance: Sharp criticism of government and praise for the national athlete
“We are deeply troubled by the absence of a clear and public response from the government to such a racist attack,” stated the Justice, Education, and Sports divisions of the Greek Left Alliance in a joint announcement, prompted by the racist comments directed at Greece’s U16 Women’s National Basketball team player Lisa Itogya.
The full statement
Warm congratulations to the athletes of our national U16 Women’s Basketball team for their outstanding achievement at EuroBasket U16 and their promotion to Division A.
This is a success that fills us with pride and confirms the talent, dedication, and potential of the new generation of Greek sport. Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches, and everyone who contributed to this remarkable distinction.
We must, however, extend special congratulations to 16-year-old Greek-Nigerian national team athlete Lisa Itogya — not only for her decisive contribution to this success, but above all for her powerful, clear, and pride-filled response to the racist attack she faced because of the color of her skin. By declaring that she will continue to wear the Greek jersey, the jersey of the country she calls home, Lisa showed extraordinary courage and character.
At the same time, we are deeply troubled by the government’s failure to issue a clear and public response to this racist attack. The state has a duty to stand against every form of racism and to send a clear message of protection, equality, and respect — particularly when children are involved.
Congratulations once again to all the girls of our national team. Keep dreaming, keep fighting, and keep making us proud.
Lisa, we are so proud of you and grateful for everything you give us both on and off the court. Sport is about integrity, a way of life, and strength of spirit!
Keep going and keep growing!
