Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Civil Protection Operations and Crisis Management Coordination Center on Sunday morning (August 2), accompanied by Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou, where he was briefed on the progress of wildfires across the country — with particular focus on the fire burning in Porto Germeno.
Officials noted that strong winds continue to batter the area, severely hampering aerial firefighting operations. Due to turbulent conditions, fixed-wing aircraft remain unable to carry out water drops, leaving helicopters as the only aerial assets currently operational. Meanwhile, ground forces have been significantly reinforced in the region, with Special Forest Operations Units deployed to penetrate and tackle the blaze in difficult-to-access terrain.
Following the briefing, discussions turned to anti-erosion works set to begin immediately in the affected areas, as well as the damage assessment process to be conducted by the State Aid Agency.
