Tensions are running extremely high at the session of the Greek Parliament’s Committee on Institutions and Transparency, which has been convened to examine the opposition’s request to summon Tal Dilian and Grigoris Dimitriadis. The atmosphere turned heated from the very start when the leader of Course of Freedom, Zoe Konstantopoulou, called out SYRIZA MP for Drama, Theophilos Xanthopoulos, for offering sweets to fellow parliamentarians in celebration of his name day.

The incident occurred after committee chairman Thanasis Bouras concluded his opening remarks, having outlined the procedure for handling the opposition’s requests. His statement drew an immediate reaction from Konstantopoulou, who sought the floor to voice her objections. At that precise moment, the SYRIZA MP requested a brief pause so he could hand out sweets to his colleagues. The timing, however, proved enough to ignite Konstantopoulou’s fury.
The exchange between Konstantopoulou and Xanthopoulos
Konstantopoulou: At the very moment a massive cover-up is about to take place, you want to hand out sweets for your name day.
Xanthopoulos: For God’s sake.
Konstantopoulou: Sometimes we have to weigh the moment. Best wishes are always welcome, but when something very serious and damaging to the country is about to happen, we need to consider what takes priority. I cannot go along with lightening the mood. What is happening here is a very serious blow, and what Parliament projects should not be some cozy gathering where we all eat and drink together.
