Following the sharp remarks made by Pavlos Marinakis targeting Alexis Tsipras and his comments on the government’s performance review, the Greek Left Alliance (ELAS), through its spokesperson Theoni Koufonikolakou, issued a new statement. Drawing on the ruling party representative’s reference to the ELAS leader’s integrity, the party’s press spokeswoman made clear New Democracy’s irritation over a previous party statement, while pointedly stressing that the governing party has failed to achieve a single meaningful result throughout its seven years in power.
The ELAS statement
The Greek Left Alliance’s response to New Democracy’s government review clearly rattled the government. Yet they have given us the perfect opportunity to repeat what everyone already knows — but what New Democracy pretends not to understand.
We laid out the facts clearly:
· Economic growth remains at the same rate as 2018.
· The country’s competitiveness has deteriorated.
· The trade deficit has skyrocketed.
· The budget surplus was built on the back of soaring prices.
· The nominal public debt has increased.
· Poverty has risen.
· Primary residence protection has been abolished.
· Non-performing loans were transferred to funds and servicers.
· Foreclosures have become a mass phenomenon.
· Wages increased on paper, not in people’s pockets, due to collapsed purchasing power.
· The list of this government’s “achievements” goes on and on…
· Wages. Cost of living. Poverty. Housing. Healthcare. Education. Transparency.
What does the government have to show for 7 years in power?
Nothing good. But they’re certainly trying hard with their PowerPoint presentations…
