Greece’s Minister of Migration and Asylum, Thanos Plevris, met with the United States Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, at the Ministry of Migration and Asylum. The meeting focused on the latest developments in migration policy and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Plevris meets Guilfoyle: Illegal immigration and border protection take center stage
During the meeting, Minister Plevris outlined the key priorities of the Greek government’s migration policy. Particular emphasis was placed on the new, stricter legislative framework for tackling illegal immigration, as well as the results achieved in reducing migratory flows into Greece. He also briefed the American Ambassador on the challenges facing the European Union in implementing the new Pact on Migration and Asylum. Plevris underscored the importance of protecting external borders, combating migrant smuggling networks, strengthening return procedures, and establishing a coherent pan-European framework for managing migratory pressures. The discussions also covered international developments related to migration, as well as the policy shifts seen across multiple countries in response to illegal immigration and refugee flows.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the high level of cooperation between Greece and the United States in the field of migration and asylum. They emphasized the importance of close coordination between competent authorities, the exchange of expertise, and the adoption of best practices to address contemporary migration challenges. Deputy Minister of Migration and Asylum, Sevi Voludaki, also participated in the meeting.
