Aiming to change the agenda, the government is moving forward with Constitutional Revision, seeking at least 180 votes from the current – proposing – Parliament on a series of critical articles. This concerns Article 16, which relates to state universities, as well as changes to tenure and evaluation in the Public Sector. As is customary, Constitutional Revision is a field that requires broader consensus. However, in this case, such a thing will not happen as the opposition refuses to consent.
It is characteristic that both Nikos Androulakis and Sokratis Famellos left no room for such a thing. The leader of the main opposition argued that consensus must be given by the revisionary Parliament, while the SYRIZA president made it clear that his party will not contribute to forming a 180-vote majority on any article.
With these facts in mind, tomorrow morning the Constitutional Revision Committee will convene for the first time. The multi-party committee will consist of 42 members with a multi-party presidency and will have a two-month margin to submit its report with the proposed articles for revision. Its president is expected to be Makis Voridis, the vice-president will likely be Panagiotis Doudonis (PASOK), while for the secretary position, Theofilos Xanthopoulos (SYRIZA) will probably be proposed. The multi-party committee will have a two-month deadline to submit its report, with the entire opposition disagreeing with the “suffocating,” as they characterized it, timeline. For the record, the members are as follows:
