The hearings have begun in the match-fixing scandal rocking Greek basketball. Today, three accused referees appeared before the investigating magistrate to give their testimonies. First to enter the magistrate’s office was Ilias Koromylas, a special refereeing consultant for the Greek Basketball Federation (EOK). He faces nine counts of bribing athletes and basketball officials in order to benefit Promitheas Patras.
His appearance was to be followed by the testimony of active referee Vaso Tsaroucha, with Tasos Piloidis set to be the last of the three to face the magistrate.
According to sources, all three defendants are maintaining a firm stance of denial regarding the charges brought against them.
Ilias Koromylas, at whose home €102,000 in cash was discovered, is reportedly claiming that the money came from EuroLeague earnings totaling more than €260,000.
Additionally, regarding the complaint filed by a Ukrainian referee concerning the 2021 EuroCup final, Koromylas is reportedly claiming that the matter had already been investigated and closed. According to the original complaint, the defendant allegedly approached his Ukrainian colleague and offered him €10,000 to blow the whistle in favor of Unics Kazan.
