A drug trafficking ring that used encrypted messaging apps to reach potential buyers — including minors — has been dismantled in Thessaloniki by officers from the AADE’s DEOS unit. The police operation resulted in the arrest of three individuals, aged 18, 25, and 30, with a total of 3.5 kilograms of cannabis and 120 grams of cocaine seized. The suspects allegedly used platforms such as Telegram to communicate with buyers, provide drug purchasing instructions, and process payments via cryptocurrency. Their operation was characterized by organized territory distribution, rapid order fulfillment, and deliberate concealment methods. Authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing as they work to identify additional members of the network.

Drug ring: how minors were targeted through Telegram
One of the most alarming aspects of this case is the way in which network members exploited digital communication tools. According to investigators, the suspects used encrypted platforms — including Telegram — to contact prospective buyers and provide information on obtaining various controlled substances. Among those they approached were minors, a fact that elevates the severity of the case well beyond standard drug distribution charges. In addition to facilitating purchases, the instructions shared through these platforms also covered how to complete payments using cryptocurrency, while members reportedly took deliberate steps to minimize their exposure and avoid detection by law enforcement.
The operation and three arrests
The bust was carried out following a coordinated operation built on detailed profiling of the individuals involved. An 18-year-old was the first to be arrested, found in possession of 3.5 kilograms of cannabis. DEOS unit officers then conducted specialized investigative actions, employing undercover techniques to advance the operation. Posing as interested drug buyers, they successfully made contact with two additional Greek nationals, aged 25 and 30, who were subsequently arrested. During the course of the operation, 120 grams of cocaine were also seized. All three suspects were brought before the competent prosecutor under the flagrante delicto procedure.
Home searches and seized equipment
Following the arrests, searches were carried out at the suspects’ residences, where items consistent with organized drug trafficking activity were discovered. Among the findings were a precision scale and a cryptocurrency payment device — both of which are now being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. Evidence gathered during the searches also confirmed that the network had established a structured operational model, complete with defined distribution zones and the capacity for rapid, on-demand drug delivery. Members employed covert concealment methods and took active precautions to avoid surveillance. Despite the three arrests, authorities do not consider the case closed, as investigations are continuing with the aim of identifying and dismantling the remaining cells of the organization.
