The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, July 23, 2026, when the 42-year-old woman — her face concealed — broke into the home of a couple. The 41-year-old resident claimed he acted in self-defense against an attempted robbery, inflicting a fatal stab wound to her back.

Syros murder: “I saw two knives” — eyewitness gives chilling account of the crime
Authorities are thoroughly investigating the accused’s claims, as another attempted robbery at the same property had taken place just days earlier. According to a report by the Live News program, the 42-year-old had arrived on the island one day before the incident, while investigators are also looking into reports that she had been seeking information about the exact location of the house.
Meanwhile, testimony from an eyewitness paints a dramatic picture of the moments surrounding the crime. The witness described hearing screams and seeing the 41-year-old man standing over the 42-year-old woman, who was lying face down on the ground. At the scene, he noticed two knives — one bent and bloodied lying next to the victim and the accused, and one large, clean butcher’s knife on the steps of the house — and stressed that the accused’s right hand was covered in blood.
Speaking to Live News, the man recounted: “I saw the accused standing over the woman. He was holding her hands, they were crossed, and he was pulling them. The 42-year-old was lying on the ground, face down, with her head and stomach pressed to the floor. She was still wearing her hood — her face was hidden.”
He continued: “I heard screams. A woman was shouting, screaming, but I couldn’t understand what she was saying because it was in Greek. I don’t speak Greek. Then I heard another woman’s voice screaming. She was running and then talking on the phone — she was probably calling an ambulance. There was also a man’s voice briefly, and then silence.
At the scene, I saw two knives. One was next to the victim and the accused — it was covered in blood and its handle was bent. Further away, on the steps of the house, I saw a large knife. It looked like a butcher’s knife; that one was clean.”
Finally, he added: “I didn’t see blood anywhere else at the scene. The accused had blood on his hand. His right hand was covered in blood.”
The 41-year-old defendant was brought before the Syros Misdemeanor Court Council, which ruled that he must remain in pre-trial detention.
