Authorities made an arrest in the center of Athens on the afternoon of Saturday, July 25, after a foreign national was found in possession of hand grenades. According to reports, the operation was set in motion following intelligence gathered by authorities. The Greek FBI — Greece’s counter-terrorism and organized crime unit — is said to have been tipped off that the man, an Egyptian national, was about to take delivery of the grenades, leading to him being immediately placed under covert surveillance.

Officers had been monitoring the suspect’s movements for some time and moved in to arrest him immediately after he collected the explosives. According to the same sources, the hand grenades had been picked up from an area in the southern suburbs of Attica, after which the suspect was tracked down and arrested in the center of Athens.
Authorities are now investigating the origin of the hand grenades, as well as the purpose for which the arrested individual had them in his possession. The investigation is also being expanded to examine his potential connections, as there are indications he may have been planning an attack.
The inquiry is in full swing, with police examining all possible scenarios and searching for any accomplices or evidence that could shed further light on the case.
