Oil prices continue to trend lower as markets assess developments surrounding a potential agreement between Iran and Oman to establish a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude futures fell 0.42% to $79.12 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude recorded losses of 0.56%, trading at $74.80 per barrel.

Prices had edged higher earlier in the session but reversed direction following reports of progress in talks between Tehran and Muscat. The decline pushed Brent back below the key $80-per-barrel threshold, returning to levels last seen following the temporary ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran on June 17.
WTI has now fallen approximately 11% over the first three trading sessions of the week, as the geopolitical risk premium that had been built into oil prices due to regional tensions gradually fades.
Strait of Hormuz: Iran and Oman agree on special shipping route, but security risks persist
Iran and Oman have reportedly agreed on the geographical coordinates of a dedicated shipping lane through the Strait of Hormuz, with an official joint announcement currently being finalized.
The route is expected to remain operational for a period of two to four months, offering a temporary solution for a portion of commercial and energy traffic in the region. However, the development does not amount to a full reopening of the Strait. Investors are awaiting further details regarding transit conditions, vessel inspection procedures, and the types of cargo permitted to use the new route.
Markets are also closely monitoring ongoing talks between Washington and Tehran. US President Donald Trump stated that negotiations are continuing, raising expectations that a broader agreement could be reached that would help restore freedom of navigation through the waterway.
Despite the improved diplomatic atmosphere, threats to maritime security have not been eliminated. The British Royal Navy reported that a tanker heard two explosions while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, near the Kumzar area of Oman.
At the same time, the Houthis announced an attack on a Saudi oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden and warned that they would continue operations in the Red Sea.
