Industrial production in the country recorded a 2.1% increase in April 2026, according to data from ELSTAT, while manufacturing industry production moved upward by 1%, based on the same data. Specifically, the general industrial production index showed a 2.1% increase in April 2026 compared to the corresponding index of April 2025, versus a 3.6% decrease recorded in the corresponding comparison between 2025 and 2024.
ELSTAT: Major decline in manufacturing of electronic products
The index for the manufacturing sector of computers, electronic and optical products recorded the largest percentage decline, while the leather and leather goods industry index recorded the largest percentage increase during April 2026 compared to March 2026. When comparing April 2026 indices with the corresponding April 2025 indices, the largest percentage increase was recorded in the manufacturing of other transport equipment sector, while the largest percentage decrease was recorded in coal and lignite mining – crude oil and natural gas extraction – mining support services sectors.
Comparison of April 2026 with April 2025
The 2.1% increase in the working day-adjusted General Industrial Production Index for April 2026, compared to the corresponding April 2025 index, resulted from the following changes in the indices of individual industry sectors: From increases:
• 9.8% increase in the Electricity Supply Index.
• 1.0% increase in the Manufacturing Index. This increase was mainly contributed by changes in the indices of two-digit sectors: manufacturing of other transport equipment, manufacturing of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, leather and leather goods industry, manufacturing of machinery and equipment n.e.c., printing and reproduction of recorded media.
• 0.1% increase in the Water Supply Index.
From decreases:
• 2.8% decrease in the Mining and Quarrying Index. This decrease is due to changes in the indices of two-digit sectors: coal and lignite mining – crude oil and natural gas extraction – mining support activities.
