Minister of National Economy and Finance and Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis is traveling to Nicosia to participate in Eurogroup and informal ECOFIN meetings.
Housing takes center stage following Pierrakakis initiative
Affordable housing will be a central topic on the Eurogroup agenda, following an initiative by Kyriakos Pierrakakis to highlight the housing issue as one of Europe’s top social and economic challenges. The issue now affects almost all European countries, with impacts being more severe on young people and families.
Eurozone finance ministers will exchange views on the causes of the housing crisis and policies that can enhance citizens’ access to affordable housing. Emphasis will be placed on financing, increasing housing supply, and leveraging European tools.
The meetings take place at a critical juncture for the European economy, with energy security, competitiveness, financial stability, and growth enhancement dominating the European agenda.
The Eurogroup will discuss macroeconomic developments in the eurozone, based on the European Commission’s spring forecasts, as well as developments in international energy markets under the weight of the prolonged Middle East crisis. Particular emphasis is expected to be given to the impact of energy pressures on the European economy and inflation.
The agenda also includes an update on digital euro progress, within the framework of European initiatives to modernize the financial system and strengthen the European Union’s strategic autonomy.
In the context of the informal ECOFIN, finance ministers and central bank governors will discuss the need to accelerate European reforms to enhance EU competitiveness, based on presentations by Pierre Gramegna, head of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), and Professor Andreas Theophanous.
Meanwhile, they will exchange views on the increasing use of stablecoins, examining their role in the international financial system, as well as the challenges arising for financial stability and the regulatory framework.
On the sidelines of the meetings, Mr. Pierrakakis will have a series of contacts with European officials and counterparts.
