An almost unbelievable story comes from Virginia, where Carrie Edwards won $150,000 in the lottery thanks to numbers chosen with help from ChatGPT and decided without hesitation to donate the entire amount. Edwards participated online in the September 8th drawing and matched four of the first five numbers, along with the Powerball number, as reported by WWBT. Because she had paid an additional dollar for Power Play, the $50,000 she would have won was tripled.
How ChatGPT helped win the lottery
She admitted she wasn’t familiar with the online game and asked ChatGPT on her phone for help choosing numbers. “I said ‘ChatGPT, do you have lucky numbers for me?'” she recalled at the Virginia Lottery press conference. “‘Luck is luck,’ the chat replied and suggested numbers which I used.” Two days later she received a text message on her phone informing her she had won, and initially believed it was a scam. When her win was confirmed, she decided she wanted to donate the entire amount, explaining that she has been blessed in life and wants to help others in return.
The key theme in the charities she chose for donation
Edwards said she will split the amount among three charitable organizations. First on the list is AFTD, as her husband who passed away in 2024 had been diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration, a group of neurodegenerative disorders affecting behavior, personality, and language. Second is Shalom Farms, a regenerative farm in Richmond, which she said genuinely supports the community and those in need. Her third choice is the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, an organization “very close to her heart,” as her father was a fighter pilot and this was his favorite charitable organization.
