A sudden change in weather is expected tomorrow, Friday (24/07), with conditions resembling autumn more than summer. Dangerous weather phenomena are at the doorstep, including powerful thunderstorms, hail, and lightning, with 11 regions of the country at the epicenter.
Express severe weather: which regions are at the epicenter
According to the weather forecast by meteorologist Matina Berou on Star, tomorrow is expected to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by intense lightning activity, hailstorms, strong winds, and gusts locally exceeding 80 kilometers per hour.
At the epicenter of the severe weather are Central Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, Pieria, and Imathia. The weather deterioration, however, is expected to extend to:
- Eastern Thessaly
- Larissa
- Volos
- Pelion
- Skiathos
- Skopelos
- Alonnisos
- Central and Northern Evia
- Eastern Central Greece
- Samothrace
- Lemnos
- Thasos
A red warning has been issued for the Sporades, the coastal areas of eastern Thessaly, and central and northern Evia, where the most intense phenomena are expected. “In fact, within just a few hours, the amount of rainfall that typically falls over an entire summer could come down,” the meteorologist stressed.
Weather: which regions require special attention
Meteorologist Matina Berou highlights that certain regions require particular caution. These include:
- Halkidiki
- Pelion
- The Sporades
- Evia
At the same time, northerly winds will reach force 7 on the Beaufort scale across the open seas, and temperatures will drop noticeably, with most areas not exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.
Weather: when will it rain in Athens?
The severe weather is also expected to affect Attica, with locally strong thunderstorms developing from the afternoon through late Friday evening.
In northern and northeastern Attica, mainly in Dionyssos, Agios Stefanos, Varnavas, Marathon, Parnitha, and Penteli, within just a few hours rainfall could equal the total amount that typically falls throughout the entire month of July, with hail also likely. Additionally, the weather deterioration will be felt in the center of Athens as well.
From Saturday (25/07), the phenomena will begin to ease, with activity lingering into the early hours over the northeastern Aegean islands and the eastern parts of Magnesia, and through the morning over the Sporades and central and northern Evia. The intense weather will quickly weaken, and from midday conditions will improve across most areas, though cool temperatures and strong northerly winds will remain. From Sunday, the country is expected to return to its summer weather pattern.
