A security camera video has proven to be a crucial piece of evidence in the arrest of the 28-year-old Egyptian suspect, capturing him leaving the office of 73-year-old criminal defense attorney Stavros Georgiou just minutes after the murder. In footage aired by Mega TV, the suspect — apparently wearing red shorts — is seen exiting the building on 3rd of September Street at a quick but calm pace, carrying a laptop that investigators believe belonged to the victim. The clear recording of his facial features, combined with witness testimonies, allowed authorities to identify him.
Stavros Georgiou: Egyptian suspect charged with premeditated murder
The 28-year-old, who was already known to police for illegal entry into the country, was located and arrested. On Thursday afternoon, he was brought before a prosecutor and formally charged with premeditated murder committed in a calm mental state. According to police, following his arrest, he confessed to the act attributed to him.
It is recalled that the 28-year-old Egyptian was arrested in connection with the murder of 73-year-old criminal defense attorney Stavros Georgiou on Wednesday night, confessing to the crime after his arrest by Homicide Division detectives who had gathered sufficient evidence to identify him. According to reports, an outstanding arrest warrant had already been issued against him for a sexual assault case involving a minor, allegedly committed in 2024. He had also previously come to the attention of authorities for illegal entry into the country. The 28-year-old had applied for asylum, and his application had been rejected.
The argument in the office and the deadly attack
According to reports, the 28-year-old had been socializing with Stavros Georgiou on Monday evening, when the 73-year-old offered to drive him home. During the journey, the two men allegedly stopped at the attorney’s office on 3rd of September Street. There, a heated altercation broke out, during which the 28-year-old attacked the lawyer, beating him to death. Through investigations at the crime scene and analysis of security camera footage, authorities were able to identify the Egyptian suspect.
He beat him to death with punches and kicks
Speaking on Action24, Greek Police (ELAS) spokesperson Constantia Dimoglidou noted that investigators had gone above and beyond in solving the case quickly. “The injuries were caused by the perpetrator’s hands and feet, which means the victim died in an extremely violent manner — and that alone tells you how heinous this crime is,” she emphasized. The police spokesperson also noted that the suspect claims “he did not take any items,” while officers have confirmed that certain items are missing with no signs of a search having taken place. When asked about his broken hand, Ms. Dimoglidou stated: “Initially he refused to cooperate with officers, but then, realizing that evidence existed and that he could not explain away the fact that he had been injured and had received first aid — because he had hurt his hand during the beating of the victim — he went on to confess to the act, in his own version of events.”
