Today’s session of the Central Election Committee (KEFE) of New Democracy took place ahead of Sunday’s internal party elections, which will elect the Presidents and Councils of local party organizations nationwide, as well as delegates for the upcoming party congress.
KEFE ratified the electoral rolls, confirmed that all election committees are fully staffed at polling stations, and ensures the smooth conduct of the process. Public response to registration and candidate submissions was particularly high. A total of 122,546 members paid the annual €12 fee, securing voting and candidacy rights.
New Democracy internal elections: Increased number of new members compared to 2021
The number of active members, which has increased compared to 2021, includes a large number of new members. This figure certifies that New Democracy has the proportionally strongest active membership base not only among Greek parties, but among all European center-right parties. In these internal elections too, New Democracy continues to pioneer modern open democratic processes. It’s worth noting that New Democracy was the first party in Greece to give its members the right to participate electronically in voting for party organs since 2021.
Polls will open at 8 AM Sunday and close at 7 PM. Electronic voting will run during the same hours. For all party positions, 3,500 members will be elected from over 7,200 submitted candidacies. Notable are the demographics of active members who can vote either at the 1,200 ballot boxes set up at 233 locations nationwide, or electronically. More than half the members belong to the most dynamic age group of 25-54 years, while 42% of members are women. 48% work as employees in the private and public sectors, 27% are merchants and freelancers or work in the primary sector, and 25% are retirees.
Finally, based on candidacy submissions for all positions, it’s already estimated that the renewal rate of organization leadership members will exceed 60%.
