At Freedom Park, in the former EAT-ESA area, relatives, friends and colleagues are saying their final goodbye to Alekos Flambouraris, who passed away on November 18 at the age of 87. Current and former SYRIZA officials are attending the political funeral, including Socrates Famellos, Rena Dourou, Rania Svigou, Tasia Christodoulopoulou, Olga Gerovasili, and Katerina Notopoulou. Historic PASOK member Costas Laliotes is also present at the final farewell.
Following news of the death of the historic leftist leader, SYRIZA announced the postponement of all internal party meetings until the day of the funeral.
In its announcement, Koumoundourou specifically stated: “Due to the painful loss of our beloved comrade Alekos Flambouraris, tomorrow’s Parliamentary Group meeting is postponed, as well as all internal party procedures and SYRIZA – PS organ meetings until Thursday, the day of the funeral“.
















Who was Alekos Flambouraris
Alekos Flambouraris was born in 1938 in Athens. He was a graduate of the University of Graz, Austria, and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and worked as a civil engineer. In his youth, he was organized in the Communist Party and Lambrakis Youth and was arrested for his anti-dictatorship activities.
On January 27, 2015, he took on government duties for the first time as Minister of State in the SYRIZA-ANEL government with responsibility for coordinating government work, a position he maintained after the September 2015 elections and until 2019, with responsibilities for solving citizens’ daily problems and major development initiatives.
On September 23, 2015, he was elected for the first time as MP for Athens A with the SYRIZA ballot, and was re-elected in the 2019 elections participating in SYRIZA’s State ballot. In the May and June 2023 parliamentary elections, he was placed in the honorary last position of the State ballot.
He was married and had two children.
