After a period of harsh confrontations, New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, announced Monday that he contacted the White House to arrange a meeting with American President Donald Trump, who notably has called the mayor a communist. “My team reached out to the White House to fulfill a commitment I made to New Yorkers during the campaign,” Mamdani told reporters in the Bronx, adding that the proposed meeting was part of a pledge to voters to “address the rent crisis that is driving so many of them to leave the city.”
Mamdani on Trump meeting: “Our relationship is crucial for NYC’s future“
“We see that his actions and those of his administration in Washington have exactly the opposite effect for New Yorkers, and I’m going to explain to the president and to anyone, frankly, that these are the things we need to change if we want to help New Yorkers and Americans meet the daily needs of their lives,” Mamdani said.
Mamdani specifically emphasized to NBC New York in an interview last week that “we will reach out to the White House as we prepare to take office, because this is a relationship that will be crucial to the city’s success.”
Trump told reporters Sunday that Mamdani “would like to meet with us and we’ll work something out.”
“He’d like to come to Washington to meet,” Trump said. “We want to see everything go well for New York,” he added.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday evening regarding details of an upcoming meeting.
