A newborn baby girl was found alive inside a toilet tank in an office building in Bangkok, in a case that has shocked Thailand. The baby was discovered on November 15, when a cleaning woman heard crying while cleaning a restroom on the third floor of the building. The woman lifted the lid of the toilet tank and found the infant naked, submerged in water, with her hands already whitened and wrinkled from being in the liquid. It is estimated that the child had been placed there just a few hours after birth. Police arrived at the scene shortly before 11 AM, while the baby was immediately transported to Sirindhorn Hospital for examination. Doctors reported that she weighs approximately 2.7 kilograms and shows no signs of injury.
Thailand: “We will continue investigating to find who abandoned the baby”
The police commander of the local district stated, according to the Daily Mail, that the baby girl had been alive for less than a day and that there are no traces of the mother. “We will continue investigating to find who abandoned the baby. Officers are examining security camera footage to determine who used the restroom,” he said.
According to Thailand’s Penal Code, parents or guardians who abandon a newborn face imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to 6,000 baht, or both.
