The energy agreement between Greece and Ukraine signed yesterday, paving the way for American natural gas supply to Kyiv through the Vertical Corridor from Alexandroupolis to Ukraine, has sparked intense political debate. The agreement covers the period from December 2025 to March 2026, and political parties have already positioned themselves regarding the energy framework and its implications for the Greek economy.
Reactions to Greece’s energy role
New Democracy MP Dimitris Kairidis characterized the agreement as “significant,” noting that “what we signed with the Americans is already being implemented.” He emphasized that “our country is being upgraded to an energy hub,” adding that Zelensky came to Greece “to buy it” and that the country “is here to stand as a supporter for all of Eastern Europe.”
Referring to relations with Russia, he emphasized that “you cannot fail to be absolute when you have such violations” and pointed out that “we, unlike many northerners, are not possessed by inherent Russophobia.”
PASOK and SYRIZA objections
PASOK focuses on how the agreement affects the Greek economy and the country’s role in the region. MP Pavlos Christidis emphasized that “we want Greece to have a strong role in European and international developments,” but stressed that it must be examined “how Greece secures critical issues” and connects the matter to “the serious problems of high prices.”
SYRIZA blames the government for the situation in the energy market. MP Giorgos Karameros mentioned that upgrading Greece as an energy hub is a “national goal,” but pointed out that “locking into fossil fuels” with American LNG that “is 53% more expensive than the European average,” combined with the Energy Exchange “is a problem for Greek society.”
