The German press today focuses on Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Athens and the new energy agreement with Greece, describing our country as an emerging energy hub for Ukraine and the broader region. Meanwhile, in international affairs, the escalating pressure on Donald Trump due to the Epstein case stands out.
The n-tv network speaks of an “energy approach” between Greece and Ukraine centered on the “vertical natural gas corridor.” As the German outlet notes, “the two sides signed an agreement that will offer Kyiv additional supply security for the coming winter and the years ahead.” It also reminds that cooperation exists with the US, as recently the US, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine agreed on expanding the pipeline network to fully replace Russian supplies.
How Germans describe the LNG agreement
According to the German Journalistic Network RND, the new agreement “makes Greece an important hub for the energy supply of the country under attack from Russia.” As it emphasizes, the agreement covers deliveries from December 2025 to March 2026 and “the relevant quantities will be determined based on Ukraine’s needs.”
The Greek-Ukrainian cooperation adds to the agreement between DEPA Commercial, AKTOR and the American LNG company Venture Global, lasting twenty years. Zelenskyy stated that “Ukraine will allocate nearly two billion euros for related gas imports this coming winter.”
RND also notes that there was a positive development for Greece over the weekend, as Fitch upgraded its credit rating. This upgrade allows the Greek state to borrow “on more favorable terms,” reducing debt servicing costs.
Political earthquake in the US over the Epstein case
On the US front, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung refers to the rift in the MAGA movement, following Donald Trump’s decision to publicly disavow Marjorie Taylor Greene in the context of the Epstein files case. According to the report, Trump “counterattacks when under pressure” and gave with his move “green light to his supporters to attack the congresswoman,” who now fears for her safety.
As the newspaper notes, at the heart of the conflict lies disagreement with the more isolationist wing of the movement, which believes Trump should focus on America’s domestic problems instead of international affairs.
Süddeutsche Zeitung comments that “Jeffrey Epstein’s emails prove nothing more than what we already knew” about the Trump-Epstein relationship, but their publication “raises the temperature dramatically” in Washington and intensifies pressure on the Justice Department, which so far refuses to release the files, something that “fuels speculation.”
