The contract for the construction of an additional Defense and Intervention frigate (FDI) for the Hellenic Navy was signed on November 14 by Rear Admiral Ioannis Bouras, General Director of the General Directorate of Defense Equipment and Investments (GDAEI), and Pierre Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group. The contract covers the acquisition of the fourth FDI frigate, as well as its maintenance, with extended additional capabilities for the entire FDI HN fleet. This fourth frigate continues the FDI HN program that began in 2022 and provides for the supply of three FDI frigates + one optional, with an ambitious industrial cooperation program with Greece. It’s worth noting that the first three frigates are already under construction, with the first expected to be delivered to the Hellenic Navy in late 2025.

A high-intensity vessel, ready for combat in all seas
The FDI is a first-class frigate with proven capabilities in all combat domains: anti-aircraft, anti-submarine, anti-ship, as well as surface target capabilities and asymmetric threat response.
Flexible and with multiple deployment capabilities, it combines all functions that enable it to address, autonomously or as part of a fleet, modern and emerging threats such as latest-generation submarines, hypersonic missiles, cyberattacks, and multi-level asymmetric threats. For this purpose, it is equipped with advanced digital technologies and data processing systems. Capable of operating in all theaters of operations and responding to the evolving requirements of naval warfare, the FDI represents a significant advantage for modern navies.
Its compact configuration and unique design make it ideal for different environments and challenging maritime conditions worldwide (cold and warm waters, as well as archipelagic regions specifically).
Its ability to sail in open seas and high sea states was proven during the first sea trials of the Amiral Ronarc’h, as well as during its voyage to its first destination in Lisbon, where the crew
Additionally, the design and automated systems integrated into the FDI allow the vessel to operate with a small crew. It offers a high level of maintenance, which reduces maintenance times and optimizes operational availability.
Finally, like all vessels and their systems, the FDI has been designed and built according to NATO standards, ensuring interoperability and connectivity between allied navies.
