On Sunday, July 6, Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis will travel to Benghazi, Libya, where he will meet with the head of the Libyan National Army, General Khalifa Haftar.
It is noted that on Tuesday, July 15, the Foreign Minister will visit Tripoli, where he will have meetings with officials.
Gerapetritis: Foreign Minister’s Libya visit – Briefs Parliament before the trip
Today the minister is expected to brief the members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense of Parliament. According to the schedule, the Committee’s convening concerns developments in the Middle East, however diplomatic sources estimate that the largest part will be taken up by issues relating to Greece’s crisis with Libya.
The Foreign Minister will brief Committee members about his upcoming visit to Libya. His trip aims to reduce diplomatic tension between Athens and Benghazi. Additionally, he will also travel to the western side of Libya, seeking contacts with officials of the Tripoli government, with the ultimate goal of preventing ratification of the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum by the House of Representatives and conducting dialogue on the delimitation of maritime zones.
Nevertheless, the climate does not seem to favor Greek aspirations, as the extent of Turkey’s influence on General Haftar’s government is revealed daily, while just yesterday, the Turkish Ministry of Defense revealed that on Tuesday three military delegations connected to Haftar’s forces visited Turkey.
