At 18:43, three brothers wanted for their involvement in the double murder that shocked Borizia village on Saturday morning crossed the threshold of the Heraklion Police Department. In addition to the three young men, another brother has been arrested and is hospitalized under guard at Heraklion University Hospital after being injured during the bloody confrontation. The three young men will be taken to the department that has taken over the investigation of the case. There, they are expected to give testimony about the circumstances of the double murder. According to journalistic sources, police vehicles left the Heraklion headquarters and met the three men in a nearby village for security reasons, transporting them under increased security measures to the Police Department. Their lawyer Alexandra Spanaki is reportedly present during the procedure.
Massacre in Borizia: village becomes fortress
The scene in Borizia village on Tuesday afternoon, November 4, was telling: while the funeral of 56-year-old Evangelia Fragkiadaki was taking place in Alikiano, Chania, 400 fully armed police officers were guarding the village. The investigation continues to find those involved in the gun battle that claimed two lives – Fragkiadaki and 39-year-old Fanouris Kargakis. Arrest warrants have been issued for three of the suspects from the Fragkiadakis family who were being sought, while police are searching hands and clothing to find gunpowder residue through laboratory tests, and DNA samples have been taken. Authorities emphasize that they do not rule out their surrender, but this remains a scenario, not a certainty.

For now, however, the picture is not clear. It is not certain who placed the explosive device that became the trigger for the gun battle between members of the two families, where the weapons used in the deadly confrontation are, or who they belong to. However, police do not seriously consider the scenario of remorse, hence their presence in the village is also preventive. A blanket of terror spreads due to fear of vendetta and the possibility of retaliation. This was evident from the measures taken at the church where the funeral was held, as they had even installed metal detectors at the entrance.

Massacre in Borizia: who killed Evangelia Fragkiadaki?
The questions are not only numerous but also critical. Fanouris Kargakis was carrying a 9mm pistol during the shooting, which is considered small caliber. Thus, police do not rule out that his weapon may not have caused Fragkiadaki’s death. In fact, there is a theory that the fatal shot came from the man shooting from the higher position.
Indeed, witness statements indicate the unfortunate 56-year-old, who left two children orphaned, was pointing elsewhere when she was killed. Specifically, in the opposite direction from where it was estimated she was shot. According to an expert who spoke to cretalive, this particular bullet is “from a Kalashnikov or rifle, not from pistols.” This means that her life was cut short by a high-velocity bullet.

The killer without evidence
Only speculation, albeit with convincing structure, can be made about the person who shot Evangelia Fragkiadaki. Nothing official has emerged, no certainty. Since police have no evidence, either visual or audio, they can only give probabilities. His name will be included in the case file, but there is no evidence to make him a defendant for intentional homicide. The Fragkiadaki family, however, leaks a specific name of someone who was shooting from above – and does so with certainty.
Regarding Fanouris Kargakis, he was taken to the hospital by his sister’s husband in a car. The brother-in-law arrived at the scene where the two lives were taken, while the 39-year-old’s 4X4 vehicle has been riddled with bullets from Kalashnikov and hunting weapons.
