The October 28th 2025 long weekend is expected to mark the beginning of a dynamic winter tourism period. This year’s national holiday, falling on a Tuesday, creates ideal conditions for excursions and getaways throughout Greece. Greek travelers are taking advantage of the extended weekend to explore both nearby and distant destinations.
According to a report by Viki Tryfona for powergame.gr, last-minute bookings are increasing rapidly, while organized travel packages are selling out quickly. The increased demand signals a particularly successful winter for domestic tourism.
Mountain destinations dominate October 28th choices
The autumn atmosphere is drawing thousands of Greeks to the country’s mountainous regions. Traditional destinations like Arachova, Ioannina with the surrounding Zagori villages, picturesque Pelion, and historic Kalavryta are attracting the highest percentage of bookings.
In Kalavryta, occupancy rates range between 60% and 70%. Prices for double rooms start from 70 euros and reach up to 200 euros per night. Most visitors prefer stays of two to three nights, although many are taking advantage of the entire four-day weekend.
In the Ioannina region, including Tzoumerka, Metsovo, and Konitsa, occupancy rates reach 80%. Prices range from 60 to 250 euros for doubles, while family rooms can cost up to 300 euros per night.
Pelion maintains its popularity, with business owners offering special packages for those seeking last-minute bookings. Prices range from 60 to 140 euros for double rooms, with several available options.
Sold-out availability in northern Greece
According to the same report, northern Greece shows impressive occupancy rates reminiscent of winter tourism peaks. Florina has evolved into one of the most beloved autumn destinations, combining mountain landscapes, lakes, and authentic cuisine.
Occupancy rates in Florina reach 98%, with most available accommodations located outside the city center. Prices range from 70 to 200 euros per night, while downtown availability exists only at a five-star hotel priced at 240 euros.
Full occupancy is also shown at:
- Nymfaio and the Prespa Lakes
- Agios Panteleimonas and Amyntaio
- Lake Plastiras and the Zagori villages
Edessa reaches 86% occupancy, with Airbnb-type accommodations priced from 50 to 150 euros. Metsovo moves at 85%, with luxury hotels reaching 450 euros per night.
The rise of short-term rentals for October 28th
Short-term rental platforms like Airbnb dominate Greek travelers’ preferences. Occupancy rates at these accommodations reach 80% to 85% in popular mountain destinations, with prices increased by 15% compared to the previous year.
The increased demand is due to the privacy and flexibility they offer, as well as the ability to accommodate larger groups or families. A two-bedroom house rents for 90 to 150 euros per night, depending on location and amenities.
International destinations for the national holiday weekend
Alongside domestic options, international bookings are also increasing. Greek travelers are returning dynamically to foreign excursions, preferring organized five-day packages.
At the top of international destinations are Morocco and Egypt, followed by Malta, Prague, Vienna, London, Rome, and Paris. A five-day trip costs an average of 700 to 800 euros, while more distant getaways are pricier. An eight-day trip to Egypt reaches 1,200 euros, while Morocco costs 990 euros.
Opportunities for the tourism sector from this year’s long weekend
This year’s October 28th timing proves exceptionally favorable for the tourism sector. The national anniversary, combined with mild weather conditions and the desire for autumn renewal, creates a four-day weekend that significantly boosts the domestic tourism economy.
From the snowy landscapes of Epirus to the autumn routes of Pelion, Greek travelers seem ready to welcome winter with suitcases full of experiences. All indications show that most accommodations will remain full until the end of October.
