Four people have lost their lives in Madrid, when a multi-story building under construction collapsed yesterday afternoon. The building was being converted into a hotel. Rescue teams in Spain recovered the bodies of four people from the debris. “With great sadness we confirm that Madrid firefighters have recovered the bodies of the people who were missing after the collapse,” Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida wrote on X.

Rescue workers had recovered two bodies shortly before midnight. Two other bodies were found early Wednesday morning, Madrid emergency services reported in a post on X. The victims include three workers aged 30 to 50 from Ecuador, Mali and Guinea, as well as a 30-year-old woman who was the project’s renovation architect. At least three other people were injured in the building collapse, one of whom is hospitalized with a broken leg.
Too early to determine cause of Madrid building collapse
Approximately 30-40 people were working in the building, according to Spanish news agency EFE and local media reports. According to Madrid’s electronic registry of renovated buildings, the property was originally constructed in 1965.
Police are conducting an investigation into the cause of the collapse. However, it is still too early to determine what caused it, said Beatriz Martín, spokesperson for Madrid emergency services. Nevertheless, because this is a workplace accident, Madrid’s Judicial Police are “responsible for investigating the incident,” Madrid emergency services stated in another X post.
