Police characterize the perpetrator of the murder of the co-owner of a well-known camping site in Foinikounta and the man who worked for many years as a supervisor at the business as persistent and ruthless. The perpetrator, without fear of being detected by the dozens of tourists who were at the camping site at the time of the attack, broke into the room that houses the reception area. He had hidden a large-caliber weapon and his target was to confront both the unfortunate Kostas Tomaras, co-owner of the business, and Vasilis the supervisor. He also didn’t care that next to him was the other co-owner, Kostas Tomaras’ nephew, his brother’s son.

With quick movements, the young perpetrator drew his weapon and shot the unfortunate Kostas twice. Once in the head and once in the chest. The supervisor, despite the initial shock, tried to escape. However, the perpetrator caught up and shot him three times from the side and from behind. Then, according to the testimony of Kostas Tomaras’ nephew, the executioner turned toward him and shot him once, fortunately without hitting him. The reason the perpetrator didn’t continue shooting, police say, is because he used a revolver, a pistol with a cylinder that holds six bullets. Preferring not to waste time emptying the cylinder and loading new bullets to kill the only eyewitness to the murderous attack, he decided to flee.
He crossed about 80 meters within the fenced area of the camping site and an additional 100 meters to the road, where he boarded a motorcycle and disappeared. The way he escaped was initially revealed by a Greek-German woman who lives in a house right next to the road and reported to police that after the gunshots, she heard an engine leaving the scene at high speed. However, she didn’t see whether there were one or two passengers. The motorcycle the woman mentioned was found abandoned outside Pylos and is being examined thoroughly for genetic material and fingerprints.
The crucial issue of the motives for the double murder and attempted murder of another person remains undetermined by police. Although there are specific indications, police need concrete evidence. This may emerge from telephone wiretap authorizations and other elements of the police preliminary investigation. However, the problem for the peaceful residents of Foinikounta remains, and fear is evident as long as the perpetrator is not arrested and his real motives are not revealed.
