The dramatic events and circumstances surrounding the death of 28-year-old Spyridoula from Arta who lost her life while pregnant with her second child at the hospital are being discussed by her nurse and gynecologist. Meanwhile, Michalis Giannakos, president of POEDIN, speaking on Live News stated that on the day the 28-year-old was admitted to the hospital, there was one nurse, one midwife and one resident doctor on duty, while the head physician was on standby next to the ICU. He noted that answers must be given regarding the method of antibiotic administration and the speed of handling the complication.
Arta: The nurse breaks her silence
The nurse who administered the antibiotic spoke exclusively to Live News about the events that night.
“The husband didn’t call me to come. I was already inside the room with the woman when she suddenly jumped from the bed and told me: ‘I don’t feel well.’ I immediately rushed to her… I was shouting: ‘Doctor, quickly!’ And they came immediately, first the resident and then the intensivist and anesthesiologist,” she said.
With 37 years of service, she maintains that everything happened very quickly and there was no delay. “What do you think? That I would see the patient in this condition and leave? We too are in pain over this loss,” she emphasized.
She clarified that the 28-year-old had declared she had no allergies, a fact that was checked by the nurse, resident doctor and midwife before the first symptoms appeared. “We asked her three times if she had allergies and she said no. I asked her, and the resident doctor and the midwife asked her. We asked her again even when the first symptoms started: ‘You said you have no allergies. Is that correct?’ And she answered: ‘No, I have no allergies.'”
Exhumation and legal action
An administrative investigation is underway, while the family has filed a lawsuit for involuntary manslaughter. The family’s lawyer, Stamatia Markou, stated: “An inexperienced nurse, an absent doctor and an inadequate administration killed two lives.”
A relative of the 28-year-old said: “Spyridoula went to the hospital and died. Now what happened, what didn’t happen, nobody knows. Arta hospital has always had problems, not just now, for decades.”
The doctor’s side of the story
The gynecologist-obstetrician’s environment explained that he was immediately informed and rushed to the hospital as soon as he was notified about the anaphylactic shock. The 28-year-old was intubated and transferred to the ICU with the immediate assistance of doctors and three nurses from other departments.
The gynecologist emphasized: “With the appearance of allergic shock, there was immediate mobilization of the Obstetrics-Gynecology Clinic. The patient was not left without supervision for even a moment. Cortisone was administered immediately, the ICU duty doctors and anesthesiologist arrived very quickly.”
The administrative investigation must answer how many minutes after the anaphylactic shock manifested was adrenaline administered and how quickly the doctors reacted to save the patient.
