The sudden death of a 28-year-old pregnant woman in Arta, who suffered allergic shock after being given antibiotics at the hospital, brought back memories for a family in Katerini who experienced a similar tragedy. Like Spyridoula, Anna was also 29 years old and pregnant with her first child, but shortly after giving birth she died from allergic shock. “The memories from November 18, 2019 were awakened. We went from the joy of birth to grief over the loss of a young woman,” the family says.
“The antibiotic allergy was written in her medical file,” says the 29-year-old’s uncle
The cause of death was the administration of an antibiotic to which the woman was allergic, something her doctor knew about. The fact that she was allergic to the specific antibiotic was noted in capital red letters in the 29-year-old’s file.
Her uncle explains to Live News that although the doctor knew this from the first day he began monitoring her, he made the mistake and administered it intravenously. Death occurred within just a few minutes. “The antibiotic allergy was written in her medical file. And in red capital letters no less. From the first day she went to the hospital, not to give birth, but for pregnancy monitoring, so they knew for many months, the attending physician knew. The girl did everything right, this particular doctor did nothing right. Irresponsibility, arrogance, hubris? The result is the same. A person lost their life and a child never knew their mother.
Last January, the doctor was unanimously found guilty of the 29-year-old Anna’s death and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment with suspension.
The family calls it a slap on the wrist sentence, noting that they never heard a single apology from the doctor’s lips.
“There was no one there, only nurses when symptoms began”
Beyond the doctor’s fatal error, the 29-year-old’s uncle denounces that in Anna’s case, doctors did not realize in time that the 29-year-old had suffered anaphylactic shock from the drug they administered. “After 3-4 minutes she began having the first symptoms. There was no one there, only nurses.”
That day, Anna took her last breath in the same hospital where just hours before she had brought her first child into the world. A child who not only never knew their mother but also lost their father a year later to coronavirus.
An unthinkable tragedy for this family from Mesaia Milia, Pieria. “The little girl doesn’t have a father either. He died from coronavirus a year later.”
In November, their child will turn 6. She lives with her aunts, uncles and grandparents who do everything they can to raise her with the best resources and love, exactly as her parents would have raised her.
