Black Friday has now become an institution in Greece as well, and many are eagerly waiting for the arrival of this “black Friday” of deals, which traditionally “falls” in the last days of November.
Regarding the origin of the name Black Friday, some say it came from the black ink that businesses used on their accounting sheets when their balance sheets closed with a positive sign. There’s also a darker version that suggests that when slavery still existed, slave traders sold slaves at better prices on this particular day.
Black Friday 2025: When it “falls” this year
For 2025, Black Friday “falls” on Friday, November 28th. Already from early October, major retail chains are expected to start promoting their offers, mainly for technology products.
Also, after Black Friday traditionally follows Cyber Monday, another day that has been becoming an institution in Greece in recent years. Cyber Monday is a retailer initiative to increase revenue from online sales, and takes place on the Monday after Black Friday.
This year, Cyber Monday falls on Monday, December 1st, 2025. Cyber Monday has become the online equivalent of Black Friday. Since its establishment, the term Cyber Monday has become an international marketing term used by online retailers worldwide.
Recommendations for Black Friday
The Greek Consumer Workers Union (EEKE) of GSEE recommends not to be tempted by seemingly impressive offers and to be particularly careful not to fall victim to fraud. It’s worth doing some price comparison research beforehand if you plan to buy a product on Black Friday, to make sure you have the best deal, as a basic “myth” of the day is that prices are always the lowest on Black Friday.
Specifically, it is recommended:
- Be careful with online transactions (avoid purchasing from e-shops that operate only through social networks)
- Be careful with personal data
- Be careful with electronic fraud (via email)
